A new free service pack is available for Mozart 9.   Installing it is highly recommended. The problems it fixes are explained in bugfix9.htm. The Service Pack can be found, as always, in the support area or downloaded from Mozart 9's Help/CheckForUpdates menu command.

The installer is also certified as being published by Mozart Music Software, as described below.

 26 June 2007

Friendlier installers

The new Mozart9 service pack announced below is now certified as having been published by Mozart Music Software. This will avoid all unnecessary warnings (under Windows XP and Vista) about "unknown publishers". The language modules have not yet been "signed" by us but this development will not be long in coming.

The service pack installs the new font but does not uninstall the old one. Language module updates for Mozart 9

French, Dutch, and Swedish:  these language modules for Mozart 9 are further advanced, and updated installers for these modules can be downloaded from the file library.

Spanish: There is now also in the file library a Spanish language module which is essentially complete thanks to Iván Mendieta in Panamá, who has, very impressively, done the whole thing single-handedly. On a system running Spanish Windows all menu items, dialogues, tooltips, tips of the day, and other messages should appear in Spanish. [On a system with a non-Spanish version of Windows, some standard Microsoft dialogues will appear in the language of the computer.]

If you prefer to use Mozart in Spanish, then please load this module, and e-mail us at dave@mozart.co.uk if you find

  • untranslated text;
  • text which does not fit the space available;
  • any mistakes in translation.

[We claim full blame here at mozart music software for any mistakes and extend heartfelt thanks to Iván for the success of this translation.]

Mozart web site move

www.mozart.co.uk has moved from one computer to another! Hopefully no-one noticed. Since it was set up in 1996 it has lived on a computer in California but the increased difficulty in contacting support personnel combined with the fact that it went down without warning on Wolfgang Amadeus's birthday (27 Jan) just when lots of people were trying to visit, has prompted a move to Scotland where there's a 24 hour telephone support. We are hoping to be able to provide even better continuity.

Acoustics of woodwind instruments

A propos of nothing at all to do with mozart, the article on the acoustics of woodwind instruments is now published.   It's a bit mathematical,  (especially for conical tubes, which are almost always not discussed in the simple literature) but the author of Mozart now has a much better understanding of why clarinets and saxophones in particular turn out to be so very different from each other.

 15 November 2005

To coincide with the release of mozart 2005 there has been a reorganisation of this site, principally with the objective of separating more clearly "support" and "information" sections.  (Not entirely straightforward when many support calls are requests for information.)   There are of course prominent links between them.

Site restored

Our apologies for the site being down for the first two weeks of May. Initially this was due to an urgent need to change domain name server details and the inability to contact Nominet over a bank holiday weekend. Once this was achieved there was a further delay of 9 days while engineers at the host establishment "worked quickly" to fix the problem. We have not been advised what the problem was. But this was the first significant down time since the site was established in 1996 and we hope it will not happen again.

 25 April 2004

New Year changes to the web site

For a while now we've had difficulty distunguishing whether some pages belong in the 'information' section of the site or the "support" section. So to start 2004 we have amalgameted them into one top-level section 'information and support'. Support items like service packs will be found in the 'support' subsection of 'information and support'.

To make navigation easier, there is now a path shown at the top right of each page to show you where you are. It allows you to go back immediately to any page on the path from the top level heading to the current page.

The address of the Thompson Partnership is changing - they're in the process of moving now. The new address (in Devonshire) is now on the contacts and sales pages and on some of the order forms and will work its way through to other places over the next week or so. The 0845 telephone numbers and the e-mail address will not change, and surface mail sent to the old address will be forwarded for the foreseeable future, so don't worry if you have just sent something there.

Season's greetings from Mozart Music Software to all Mozart users!

The recent mozart 7 release (Mozart 7.0.4) was experiencing severe difficulties under Windows NT4. This service pack fixes them and ensures that it runs under NT4 as long as you have NT4 service pack 6a installed (which is necessary to make NT compatible with the latest versions of the Microsoft Libraries which mozart 7 uses). Thanks to everyone who helped sort this out.

One or two other, smaller teething troubles are also fixed - see bugfix7.txt

Site reorganisation

The information and support sections of the site have been reorganised slightly.

The Mozart viewer is now updated to coincide with the released version of Mozart 7.

Mozart 7

Mozart 7 is now out!    See the new features page for details of improvements.  Everyone who has bought a copy of mozart 6 on or after 1 March 2003 will be receiving a free upgrade through the post.  ALL other Mozart users are invited to take advantage of the special upgrade offer.  This invitation will be confirmed by e-mail or surface mail in the near future. (The Mozart user base is now large enough that this will take a little time).

The evaluation copy is now mozart 7 so that you can start trying out its new features immediately.

 15 March 2003

 23 January 2003

Less Frequently Asked Questions

The FAQ list has grown gradually over the years, but more recently some of the questions have not been asked as frequently as once they were. At least one of them applied to Mozart 1 only! The page has therefore been split into the "Frequently Asked Questions" page and a new "Nowadays-Less-Frequently-Asked-Questions" page.

Recording Audio CDs

This has elicited a lot of interest and some very helpful ideas on the mailing list of late.  Some of the wisdom on how to do this has now been distilled in an article on this site.

 26 December 2002

A Merry Christmas to everyone and have fun with Mozart in the New Year!

 11 December 2002

Music theory on the Mozart site

Of late quite a few people (in real, and cyber, space) have been asking for pointers to information on how chord names are defined. For Mozart users the answer is simple: it's all in the Mozart on-line help system. For potential Mozart users (ie almost everyone else in the world!) it seemed a good idea to add this information to a new "music theory" section of the web site. And so here it is under "definition of chord names".

There is a supporting article on the naming of intervals.

 6 November 2002

Mozart web site arrives in 21st century!

Today the web site has been updated to use HTML 4.01 instead of HTML 3.2. This may hardly seem like earth-shattering news, but in fact (by using cascading style sheets) it means that the site will be much more easily maintainable in future. Care has been taken to maintain compatibility with Internet Explorer 4 and Netscape 4.6 onwards. The new look is characterised by the diagonal music watermark at the head of the page (created by importing Mozart output into a graphic editor and rotating it).

 4 November 2002

 4 June 2002

The Mozart Viewer is now available!

We have been asked fairly often for a free "Mozart Viewer" - a program to view Mozart files but which won't edit or create them. It is now available in the downloads area

Mozart users can now send files to friends, who can use this viewer to show, print, and play them, without needing to buy their own copy of Mozart.

 16 May 2002

The Cirencester Early Music Festival

Mozart has always had a following among enthusiasts of music which significantly predates the composer after whom the program was named. It is therefore with great pleasure that we again expect to be at the Cirencester Early Music Festival, represented as in previous years by Mark Venn. The Festival is taking place this year between 21 and 28 July.

 26 April 2002

New templates available

Peter Thurley has kindly sent in three new templates which we are very happy to make available in the downloads area. These should be especially useful for those writing vocal music for four voices or church music.

 5 April 2002

Mozart service pack 6.0.5

One or two more small bugs have come to light and are fixed in this new free service pack, available in the support area It converts any previous Mozart Virtuoso edition (6.0.x) to 6.0.5.

Mozart users, being on the whole a particularly astute bunch of people, may notice that there was never a service pack 6.0.4. Do not worry - it was never released. (Just after evaluation copy 6.0.4 was published, we received notification of another "small infelicity" which was hastily fixed here too, and our configuartion control then necessitated increasing the third digit in the version number. As usual, see bugfix6.txt for details.)

 31 March 2002

Changes to ordering and support procedures

Small changes have been made to the way Mozart is distributed and the order forms for the USA and Canada have been changed to reflect that.

Day-to-day support is now available to all users from support@ttp.co.uk and this is where you should go for help if the usual channels - help-system, tutorial, FAQ page, mailing list - prove inadequate.

(Et si vous préférez parler français vous pouvez nous contacter encore ŕ ventes@ttpfr.com .)

Evaluation copy of Mozart 6.0.4

The evaluation copy in the Downloads area is now updated to version 6.0.4. This includes the new order forms but also one or two small bug-fixes. Service Pack 6.0.4 for those who have bought the program will be available very soon.

Join the mailing list!

The discussion area now consists of information about, and links to, the mailing list, which can be used either as a traditional mailing list or as an on-line discussion group. It is more powerful and flexible than the old discussion area and has been proving more popular for some time. We'll post news there (as well as here) and here are many Mozart users there willing to share their expertise.

Big Band template

It is also worth mentioning here that one of my last actions of 2001 was to put a template for an 18 piece big band score on the accessories page in the Downloads area (for mozart 6 users).

 11 November 2001

Mozart service pack 6.0.1

One or two users have reported teething troubles with Mozart 6.0.0.

Mozart 6 now available!

Here are some quick links to places on the site where you can find out more about it:

To co-ordinate with the launch of Mozart 6, we have revamped the site a little:

  • The up arrow on the right of the navigation bar takes you to the top page in the current section.
  • There are a lot more illustrations (but,as before, we have kept the big ones off the main pages, so that you can navigate the site quickly and efficiently).
  • Many of the topics have been updated to take account of the new capabilities of Mozart 6.

The London International Exhibition of Early Music

is taking place on 27,28,29 October 2000 at the Royal College of Music, Prince Consort Road, London, SW7 2BS.

Mozart will once again be there sharing Mark Venn's stand with his hand-made early woodwind instruments. Mark and his able assistants are long time Mozart users themselves, and will be happy to put Mozart through its paces for you on the stand.

Dave and Margaret Webber of Mozart Music Software hope to be there helping Mark for at least some of the show - the (currently partly closed-at-no-notice) West Coast Main Railway Line permitting!

 30 September 2000

Mozart discussion pages

Mozart's discussion pages have been thoroughly spring-cleaned and should no longer require scrolling to get to the most recent messages. This has meant that all existing messages have been lost. Apologies to those who have posted recently.

If you have been there recently, you may have to press the refresh button on your browser to update the navigation bar link.

 18 April 2000

Mozart service pack 4.0.6

  27 February 2000

Mozart mailing list

As of today there is an official Mozart mailing list. To subscribe just go to http://www.onelist.com/subscribe/mozart_software and follow the instructions. It only takes a moment.

After subscribing you'll be able to post messages to the mailing list simply by e-mailing them to mozart_software@onelist.com and all subscribed members will receive them. (And if you get fed up with it - unsubscribing is just as easy!)

Traffic on the list will be low until the membership builds up, but we hope that before long everyone will find this a very useful service for news and discussions about Mozart.

 10 February 2000

 November 1999

Mozart VIRTUOSO

makes no use of dates in its computations and therefore we have had almost no enquiries about "Year 2000" compliance. Nevertheless Mozart has been tested and the first such enquiry has prompted us to make an official statement that Mozart exhibits no problems as the computer's date ticks over and continues into the new millennium. [Official statement removed October 2001 as this is no longer an issue and looks rather dated now!]

 18 October 1999

Mozart now has...

A beautiful new box design incorporating the new logo. Here it is.

 11 October 1999

Mozart in education...

On the 27th of this month we'll be showing Mozart off to teachers at the Music in Education Conference at Oundle School near Peterborough, UK.
...and for Early Music...
Mozart will also be featured, together with his hand crafted replica woodwind instruments, by Mark Venn at the Early Music Exhibition at the Royal College of Music in London next month (29-31 October).
(Regular visitors to this site will notice our new logo - the first instance of html written with a quill pen? - timed to be brought out at these events.)

 6 June 1999

Mozart service pack 4.0.2

A new free service pack is now available in the support area which fixes one or two more small bugs in the virtuoso edition of Mozart 4.

The evaluation copy is now also updated to Mozart 4.0.2

 6 May 1999

Mozart service pack 4.0.1

A lot changed going from Mozart 3 to Mozart 4. For this reason we had a long beta testing period before the release. This caught nearly all the bugs which might have appeared but, as always, despite the diligence of the testers, one or two (very small) ones crept through the net. These are fixed by the free service pack now available in the support area.

 1 May 1999

Mozart service pack 3.3.1

One more bug is fixed for users of Mozart 3 in this service pack which is now available in the support area. (A play back problem if you have 3rd time bars.)

 25 March 1999

Mozart 4

Mozart 4 is here! This is the long-awaited version which will do chords and more than one part on a stave - allowing piano/organ scores, double stopping, short scores - and of course it all plays back through your sound card.

If you haven't seen the latest evaluation copy, then please visit "Downloads" above and give it a try. The excerpt shown here from Scott Joplin's haunting piano piece "Solace" requires 5 strands and is just one example of what may easily be done with the Mozart Virtuoso Edition.

Instrumentation notes

We have started an illustrated information page on instruments with some very brief notes for composers and arrangers who may not be familiar with all instruments. But of course no-one is familiar with all instruments and it is our plan to start the page now with a few and add more over time as information and photographs become available.

 1 December 1998

Yet more on MIDI percussion

One of the nice things about running this site is that Mozart users keep sending me useful things.  The latest is an observation that my percussion list on the MIDI page was incomplete.  This was accompanied by a marvellous .mz file naming and demonstrating all the percussion instruments and allowing me to extend the list.  It is now on the MIDI page for everyone.  I hope you find it as useful as I do.  Thanks Tim.

 18 October 1998

More MIDI percussion

There has been a lot more interest in unpitched percussion sounds, and so we have great pleasure in presenting a few more details on the page covering the basics of MIDI.

 1 August 1998

MIDI

If you're an acoustic musician for whom MIDI is a closed book, there is now a page introducing the basics of MIDI which will help you get the best out of your play-back from Mozart, including how to add percussion.

 24 July 1998

Mozart service pack 3.2

One more bug is fixed here - a playback problem if you had a go-to-coda at the same place as the start of a first time bar. The service pack is now available for registered users in the support area.

 9 June 1998

Mozart accessories to download

The downloads area now includes (a) some Mozart logo buttons which you can use on your own web site if you wish to link to these pages and (b) some mz files which can help speed up creating new music to a specific format.  Both of these offerings sprang from ideas contributed by registered Mozart users, who are cordially thanked.

 2 May 1998

Mozart discussion pages

The Mozart discussion pages have been broken for a little while. This was originally due to a problem with the server not putting messages in the right order. When we tried to tidy this up something broke. Having found no other way to correct it we have had to remove all the messages from March and April and start again. Apologies to all those who posted there. We're getting better at this and hopefully it won't happen again.

Mozart site navigation

Some changes to the organisation of the site have been made, in order (we hope) to make it easier to get around.

 7 March 1998

Mozart discussion pages

We've had a number of requests for discussion pages or a mailing list ...or some way for Mozart users to get together. Well at last it's here. At the moment you can get there from the contents and information pages, or from here!  Later we plan to make them easier to find from the menu at the top of the page.

[Pages discontinued in 2002.  See the mailing list which replaces them.]

 5 March 1998

The Mozart Users Association - pictures!

The users' association pages continue to grow with more registered users sending in details about themselves and their musical interests. In particular the library of example pieces is growing too. Please let's have more people joining in!

Another suggestion is that it would be nice to see actual photographs of the people who have contributed to these pages. If anyone present would like to submit a GIF or (better) JPEG picture of themselves, then please do. There seems to be a developing "house style" for instrumentalists that the picture should show you playing your instrument - if possible!  Click on the little person icon (eg right) to see a picture. photo

 26 December 1997

Mozart Service Pack 3.1

We are pleased to announce a new support service to registered users in the form of Mozart service pack 3.1.  This applies to the registered Virtuoso Editions of Mozart from version 3.0.0 to 3.0.6 inclusive, and converts them to version 3.1.0. This allows all registered users of Mozart 3 to benefit from the latest improvements. (See the Mozart Service Pack page.)

 15 December 1997

The Mozart FAQ page

The Mozart FAQ page continues to grow.  One common problem is to do with printer drivers and we are now starting to add more specific information about where to obtain updated drivers for specific printers.

 14 November 1997

The Mozart Users Association page

and the users' examples pages started last month (see below) are growing.  Thanks to those who have contributed to both and please keep the contributions coming.

 19 October 1997

The Mozart Users Association

Until now there has been no information about users of Mozart in these pages. However, as a new development, we'd like to include a short paragraph of information about as many registered users as would like to be here. One or two have kindly started the ball rolling.  Please have a look at the Mozart Users Association page. Some users have kindly allowed their work to be shown too - on the users' examples page.

 1 October 1997

Mozart 3.0

Mozart 3.0 is now available with some new features. (This requires Microsoft Windows 95 or NT.)   See:

 1 October 1997

The new-look web site

The overall appearance and structure of the Mozart web site has changed - to coincide with the release of Mozart 3.0. In particular, some of the new inclusions are:

Until now http://www.mozart.co.uk was possibly one of the last remaining web sites in the world where the pages were written by hand in HTML (which is the web source language which you see when you use "View Source" or equivalent on your browser's menu). However, just as the quill pen for writing music has gone out in favour of WYSIWYG editors like Mozart, hand crafted HTML is now also largely a thing of the past. With a sigh of nostalgia for the old days (or is it just relief?) we are therefore coming into the 21st century by adopting some automated web scripting tools. We hope that this has enabled us to make the site clearer and more exciting than ever.
